      What is Slack?

Slack⭷ is an instant messaging app for big organizations (like RPCC and CCL!).

Slack's left sidebar has ongoing group chats, called channels, and ephimeral one-to-one chats, called direct messages.

The rest of the window, to the right of the sidebar, displays the messages in your currently-selected channel or direct message conversation.

      What are channels?

Channels are the specific group chat rooms listed in the left sidebar in Slack (each preceded with a “#”). Because the RPCC Slack is shared with other climate activist groups, there are a few types of channels:

Shared channels (such as #all-townsquare⭷ and #all-slack-tech-support⭷)
Anyone on the Slack is welcome to post in those channels. These channel names all start with “all-”.

      CCL channels (such as #ccl-townsquare⭷)
Used for CCL-specific discussions. These channel names all start with “ccl-”.

Other organizations' channels (such as #rpcc-tabling⭷ and #padd-townsquare⭷)
Used for others' group-specific discussions. It is great to get involved with these other groups, but be respectful if they do some things differently than CCL. These channel names include the initialisms for their groups as well (e.g., “dda-”, “padd-”, or “rpcc-”).

(Note: Temporary channels may be created for planning certain events or initiatives, and then archived after they are done. Those channels will usually start with “event-” or “project-”.)

How do I get notifications of new messages?

You can access your notification preferences for the entire RPCC Slack workspace by selecting the “RPCC” menu at the top-left corner of the window, and then selecting “Preferences”.

Slack lets you set 3 levels of notifications:
    • All new messages - pop up a notification anytime anyone sends a message to a channel you are in
    • Direct messages, mentions, & keywords (this is probably what you want) - only pop up a notification when someone sends a message that should get your attention
    • Nothing - never pop up a notification

How do I get different notifications for different channels?

You probably set your workspace notifications to “Direct messages, mentions, & keywords”, but sometimes you want to be notified about all messages in a particular channel. To do that:
    • Select the channel in the left sidebar if it is not already open.
    • Select the ⓘ” icon on the top toolbar if the right sidebar is not already open.
    • Expand the “Notification Preferences” section of the right sidebar if it is not already open.
    • Select “Edit Preferences”.

    • Loading

Your channel-specific notification preferences will override your workspace notification preferences.

How do I make sure other people see my message?

Normally, you should trust people to set their own notification preferences, but sometimes you have a message it is really important a particular person see. In that case, you have a couple options:

If the message is relevant to other people in a channel, but there is one person who particularly needs to see it, you can @-mention that person: Type an “@”, followed by the person's name, and select it from the menu that appears. When you send the message, that person will receive a notification.

If the message is only relevant to the one person, send a direct message: Click the “Direct Messages” header in the left sidebar, then type the person's name, and select it. You should now be in a private chat with that person.

Be careful not to use these too much! If someone is getting too many notifications, xe may turn them off entirely!
